About Mark
Mark R. Somerstein brings more than three decades of experience helping boards of directors, senior management teams, creditors and investors navigate periods of financial and operational challenge and make enterprise-level risk management decisions.
Before founding MS Restructuring Advisory Services LLC, Mark was a partner for 20 years in the business restructuring practice group at Ropes & Gray LLP. He advised distressed companies and their stakeholders on restructuring strategy, governance matters and complex special situations across a wide range of industries.
His approach combines independence of judgment, close alignment with client objectives and a practical focus on preserving value and reaching workable solutions.

Appointed unsecured creditor trustee in the chapter 11 cases of Magnum Hunter Resources and its debtor affiliates, addressing claims reconciliation and creditor distributions.
Represented the independent manager in the multi-billion-dollar chapter 11 cases of FirstEnergy Solutions and affiliates, advising on governance, intercompany and related-party matters.
Represented the special committee of the board in investigating and addressing potential causes of action connected with affiliated entities and related-party transactions.
Served as lead counsel to Vesta Holdings and Silicon Graphics, advising boards and management, designing restructuring strategy, managing business sales and formulating chapter 11 plans.
Led representations for numerous official unsecured creditors’ committees and advised major indenture trustees, administrative agents and collateral agents in U.S. and international insolvency proceedings.
